Programs

GMHA offers a variety of hockey programs.

The Skating School Program is a learn to skate program. It is geared to those born in 2004, and 2003 and some older children who have limited skating ability. Our main purpose is to develop basic balance and skating skills. This program is taught with full hockey equipment. It is with proper instruction that these skaters will move up to the next level of hockey. Development means progress, so each week the drills will vary little, for repetition and development of skating skills is essential.

The GMHA Skill Development 1 and Skill Development 2 Programs, for players born in 2001, 2002 and 2003 birth year is part of the GMHA initiation program (CHIP) and is the stepping stone from skating school to the GMHA House League. The program provides these young players with an opportunity to play on a team and continue to develop their skills before moving on to house league or rep hockey. Emphasis is on further developing skating and hockey skills through the introduction of basic puck handling, and passing through pond hockey style games. More complex skill development is taught in Skill Development 2 with the introduction of a more structure game format including the learning of rules.

The GMHA House League (H/L) Program provides players from Novice to Midget to play recreational hockey with other Guelph youth within the City of Guelph. There is typically one practice and one game per week. House League games include fair play hockey. Teams participate in a regular season and playoff schedule.

The GMHA House League Select Program provides H/L players who desire a more competitive level of hockey to play on an additional team. They will attend one "out of town" game and additional practices per month. Teams may also participate in OMHA sanctioned tournaments.

The Representative Level (AAA, AA, and A) Program provides players competitive hockey play within OMHA areas. Our "AAA" Teams play within the South Central League, while the "AA" Teams play in the Tri-County Minor Hockey League (Bowan Division). The "A" Teams play in the Tri-County Minor Hockey League (Smith Division). This level of play requires additional fees, travel, and time. Teams have a regular and playoff schedules and participate in OMHA sanctioned tournaments. Players must attend tryouts for Select and Rep play.
